The ritual
The notification arrives at the worst possible moment. You are about to take a photo, or install something, or record a video of something that will not happen twice.
So you do the ritual. Open the storage screen. Delete a hundred photos. Watch the number move by almost nothing. Delete an app you have not opened in a year. Move by almost nothing again. Give up, delete the largest thing you can find, and buy yourself another three weeks.
Three weeks later you do it again.
The reason this never sticks is that almost nobody is deleting the thing that is actually full. The storage screen is not designed to tell you, and the largest single consumer of space on most phones does not appear as a line item at all.
Where the space actually goes
Four things dominate, in roughly this order.
1. Video
This is the one people underestimate by an order of magnitude.
A photo is a few megabytes. A minute of 1080p video is somewhere around 130 MB. A minute of 4K is several hundred. Your phone probably records 4K by default, and it has probably been doing so since you bought it.
That means a single three-minute clip can outweigh three hundred photos. When you spend twenty minutes deleting holiday pictures and the number barely moves, this is why. You were clearing the small stuff by hand while the large stuff sat untouched.
2. Offline downloads you forgot you made
Every media app now downloads content for offline use, and most of them do it more eagerly than you realised.
Podcast apps that keep every episode you have played. Music apps set to download your whole library. A video app that pre-downloads the next few episodes on Wi-Fi as a convenience. Offline maps for a city you visited in 2023. Ebooks and audiobooks. Language lessons.
None of this appears as "downloads". It is filed under the app, or under the leftover bucket, and it accumulates silently because the whole point of the feature is that you do not have to think about it.
3. Messaging attachments
This is the quiet giant.
Group chats auto-download every image, video, voice note and meme sent to them, and keep them forever by default. Multiply that by the number of groups you are in and the number of years you have been in them. It is extremely common for a messaging app to be the single largest thing on a phone, several gigabytes of content you have never deliberately saved and will never look at.
4. The bucket labelled nothing in particular
iOS calls it System Data. Android calls it Other, or System, or splits it across categories depending on the manufacturer.
It contains caches, logs, partial update files, temporary working files, and anything the operating system cannot confidently file elsewhere. It grows on its own. It is largely not manageable by hand. And it is the reason the categories on your storage screen do not add up to the total.
You are not imagining that. The screen genuinely does not account for all the space it says is used.
Why deleting photos feels so useless
Three separate things are working against you.
The holding area. Deleted photos go to Recently Deleted on iOS for around 30 days, and to Trash in Google Photos for around 60. They take up full space that entire time. If you have never emptied that folder, there may be a year of "deleted" photos sitting on the device right now.
Cloud sync confusion. If your photos sync to iCloud or Google Photos, the local file may already be a small optimised version rather than the original. Deleting it frees very little, and depending on your settings it may also delete the cloud copy, which is the worst of both outcomes.
Scale. Even done properly, photos are the wrong target. You are picking through the smallest items on the device one at a time.
The order that actually works
Do these in sequence. Stop when you have enough room. Most people never get past step three.
1. Empty the deleted-photos folder. Not the photos app, the Recently Deleted or Trash folder inside it. This alone frequently frees several gigabytes and takes about fifteen seconds. Nothing else on this list has a better ratio.
2. Sort your videos by size and delete the largest five. Not by date, by size. Both platforms will do this in the storage screen. You are looking for accidental recordings, screen captures, and things you filmed once and never watched.
3. Open your messaging app's own storage screen. Every major messaging app has one, buried in settings, that shows the largest files and the heaviest conversations. Delete media from group chats first. Then turn off auto-download for videos, which stops the problem recurring.
4. Audit offline downloads. Go through your music, podcast, video and map apps and clear what you are not using. While you are there, turn off automatic downloading. This is the step that determines whether you are back here in three weeks.
5. Clear caches on your three largest apps. Safe, reversible, and temporary. The cache will rebuild, which is exactly the point of a cache, so treat this as buying a few days rather than fixing anything.
6. Only now, consider deleting apps. An app you have not opened in six months is dead weight regardless of size. But do it for the clarity, not the storage, because the storage saving is usually smaller than you expect. Skip the cleaner apps
There is an entire category of app that promises to fix this for you, and it is worth understanding why it exists.
Both operating systems already purge temporary files automatically when storage runs low. A third-party cleaner has no privileged access to do more than you can do yourself, and on modern Android and iOS it is heavily restricted from touching other apps' data at all.
What it does have is a reason to ask for broad storage and file permissions, and a business model that usually runs on advertising. You are granting unusually wide access to a company whose incentive is to keep you opening the app. If you want the full version of that argument, it is in how free apps actually make money and app permissions explained.

Why this keeps happening
Worth naming the structural part, because it explains why the problem never quite resolves.
Apps grow. Not maliciously, just continuously. Every release adds features, frameworks, analytics libraries and cached assets. An app is almost never smaller than it was last year. That is the storage version of a pattern we covered in why apps get worse over time, and the cause is the same set of incentives.
Media quality keeps rising. Default recording resolution goes up with each device generation. The same thirty-second clip of your dog costs meaningfully more storage than it did three phones ago, and nobody ever changes the default back down.
Nobody is paid to help you. Freeing space is not a growth metric. There is no team measured on how much storage users reclaim, and there is a fairly direct commercial relationship between running out of space and buying either a cloud subscription or a higher-capacity device next time. That is not a conspiracy, but it does explain why the tools are adequate rather than good.

When the answer really is more space
Sometimes the cleanup is not the answer and you genuinely need more room. It is worth knowing which of the three options you are actually choosing between, because they are not interchangeable.
A memory card, if your Android phone still takes one. Fewer do each year, and the ones that do often restrict what can be moved onto it. App data usually cannot go there at all. Treat a card as somewhere to park photos, videos and offline media rather than as a general extension of the phone.
A cloud plan, which is the option every phone will steer you toward, because the prompt appears at the exact moment you are frustrated. It genuinely solves the problem, and it is also a permanent monthly cost attached to something that will keep growing. Decide it calmly rather than at the moment the camera refuses to open.
A bigger phone next time, which is the honest answer for a lot of people. Storage is one of the few specifications that reliably matters years later, and the jump to the next tier is usually cheaper than several years of a cloud subscription. If you are consistently full, buy the storage once instead of renting it monthly.
The trap is drifting into the second option by accident. A subscription you accepted during a moment of frustration is exactly the kind that never gets reviewed again.
Two settings worth changing today
Everything above is cleanup. These two are prevention, and they take a minute each.
Turn off auto-download for videos in your messaging apps. Images are usually fine to leave on. Video is where the volume is. This single change does more for long-term storage than any amount of deleting.
Drop your camera from 4K to 1080p unless you have a specific reason to keep it. For anything that ends up on a phone screen or in a chat, the difference is close to invisible, and the file is a fraction of the size. You can always switch back for the shot that deserves it.

Because deleted photos are not gone yet. Both platforms move them to a holding area first, roughly 30 days on iOS and around 60 days in Google Photos, and they occupy space the entire time. Until you empty that folder you have not freed anything. If the photos were also synced to the cloud, deleting the local copy may only remove a thumbnail-sized file anyway.

Videos, by a wide margin. A minute of 4K video runs to several hundred megabytes, while a photo is typically a few megabytes. Deleting one three-minute video you will never watch can free more space than deleting several hundred photos, and you lose far less.
Apps grow after installation. They cache images, download offline content, accumulate message attachments, and ship larger updates over time. A messaging app that arrived at 200 MB can be several gigabytes a year later without you doing anything except using it normally.
Clearing the cache is safe and removes only temporary files, though the app will be slower briefly while it rebuilds them. Clearing storage or app data is different and wipes your settings and local content, often logging you out. On Android the two sit next to each other in the same screen, which is why people lose things.
